Familia Leguminoase
Genul, cuprinzand in afara de specii anuale si specii vivace, a fost descris la capitolul Plante perene.
Dintre speciile anuale mai cunoscute in cultura amintim:
Lupinus hartwegii Lindl., planta anuala pana la vivace, cu tulpina inalta de 30-60 cm, putin ramificata si frunze petiolate, lungi, digitate, florile (albe, albastre, roz, rosii, purpurii) dispuse intr-un spic lunf de 25-30 cm, sunt pedunculate, putin verticale, infloreste din iulie pana in octombrie.
Este una dintre cele mai populare plante anuale pentru borduri.
Lupinus hirsutus L., planta putin ramificata, matasos paroasa, inalta pana la 50 cm, cu frunze petiolate, digitate. Florile mari, dispuse in spice lungi de ccs 10-12 cm, sunt alterne sau verticilate. Infloreste in perioada iulie-septembrie.
Lupinus mutabilis Sweet, cu tulpina ramificata spre varf, inalta de pana la 1,20-1,50 m, planta glabra, de un verde glauc, cu frunze petiolate oval-oblonge, ascutite, digitate. Florile de culoare variabila, grupate in spice putin stranse, sunt alterne, sau putin verticilate, scurt pedunculate si odorante.
Lupinus nanus Dougl., planta de la baza ramificata in forma de rozeta, dupa care se indreapta in sus, inalta de 25-30 cm, cu frunze petiolate, digitate. Florile sunt reunite in numeroase spice dispuse neregulat, deseori, in verticile de cate 6-8.
Deoarece cafelutele anuale nu suporta transplantul, se va semana pe la sfarsitul lui aprilie, la locul definitiv (puterea de germinatie a semintei este de 5 ani), in cuiburi la 30 cm distanta, cate 3-4 seminte, acoperindu-le cu pamant bine ingrasat cu mranita sau in randuri, rarind rasadul iesit prea des.
